Newcastle United are hoping Crystal Palace will compromise over Marc Guehi after they returned for the England defender with a third bid, according to Sky Sports News.
Magpies boss Eddie Howe has identified Guehi as the top defensive target he wants to add and the club are hard at work trying to get a deal done.
Newcastle have returned with a third offer for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as the deal for the England's centre-back reaches a crucial stage.
Mail Sport revealed on Friday that the Magpies had seen their second offer, believed to be just under £50million, turned down by Palace - who are determined to keep Guehi at the club.
Sporting director Paul Mitchell is handling negotiations for Newcastle and is set to table an improved package in the coming days in the hope of securing the club's No 1 summer target.
Eagles co-owner Steve Parish, who is leading discussions for the south London club, wants a deal worth a minimum £65million for Guehi.
Newcastle's next offer will likely prove pivotal towards their chances of securing Guehi this summer.
Eddie Howe has made Guehi his preferred central defensive target ahead of the new season and is fully behind Newcastle's move to sign one of England's stars of Euro 2024.
However, their is an acceptance that the club need to sign a new central defender this summer with sources indicating the Magpies may consider other options if their next offer is unsuccessful.
AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw has been a target for Newcastle, but he is understood to be reluctant to leave the San Siro, particularly with the club playing Champions League football this year.
Guehi has just under two years left on his current contract meaning he can start negotiating a free transfer exit away from south London in January 2026.
Understandably, Palace are desperate to avoid that scenario and are willing to offer their centre back a new contract that would make him one of the best paid players in the club's history.
Palace head coach Oliver Glasner will push for the signing of Wolfsburg centre back Maxence Lacroix if Guehi departs.

Juventus Growing Confident Of Signing Newcastle United Target per Inside Football
Juventus are growing optimistic about getting a deal done to secure the signature of Newcastle United-linked winger Nicolas Gonzalez this summer.
Gonzalez has been on Newcastle’s shortlist of targets in the ongoing transfer window and has admirers on Tyneside.
However, Newcastle are yet to make a decision on whether to pursue his signature and are now facing the risk of losing out on signing him this summer.
Juventus are pushing hard to sign the Argentinian in time to have him in their team for the opening league game in a week’s time.
According to Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport, the Serie A giants are growing confident of securing a deal in the coming days.
A broad agreement worth €30m is already in place between Juventus and Fiorentina for the Argentinian’s transfer.
The two clubs are discussing the prospect of including players in the operation but that could delay the deal.
Juventus are now plotting to have a clear agreement in place for Gonzalez’s transfer without any makeweights.
Personal terms are already in place and Gonzalez is keen to move to Turin in the ongoing transfer window.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe issues Anthony Gordon transfer update amid Liverpool interest in England star per Goal.com
Eddie Howe insists Anthony Gordon is an "integral" part of Newcastle's plans as the winger faces interest from Liverpool.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Newcastle were close to losing Gordon earlier in the window when they agreed a deal with Liverpool that would have sent Joe Gomez to St. James' Park. But the deal, inspired by the Magpies' need to sell in order to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), fell through when funds were raised by other departures. Still, Liverpool retain an interest in Gordon and have until August 30 to make a deal happen.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Gordon enjoyed the best season of his career in 2023-24 and under normal circumstances, Newcastle would consider him unsellable. But PSR considerations have left the club needing to sell, so the rumours will continue to swirl around the England international. Speaking to the media as Newcastle wrap-up their pre-season preparations, the 46-year-old admitted he has no desire to see Gordon leave while opening up on his current state of mind.
WHAT HOWE SAID
"His head is where Bruno's (Bruno Guimaraes has also been linked with a move away) is. He's with Newcastle," Howe told reporters. "No distractions. He’s been really impressive (in training). His focus has been on his work and his fitness, everything to do with this football club, nothing else."
Howe said the deal with Liverpool was "a difficult time", admitting the club were forced into striking a deal with the Reds due to PSR rules.
“I'm confident he is okay," the Newcastle boss added. "We've had no conversations over the summer where it has been fractious or negative.
"He's always been the Anthony Gordon who has given absolutely everything to Newcastle. He's such an important player for us.
"We didn't want to lose anybody. Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought really hard to make the right decisions in those last couple of weeks.
"The rules forced us to do things we didn't want to do. It was a really difficult time; there was a lot of uncertainty, and we didn't know what was going to happen.
"It was very, very difficult, but Anthony is an integral part of what we're doing. He needs a bit of a break. He's had a long season and the Euros will have been emotional for him as well. Hopefully, by the time he comes back, he's ready to go."
Eddie Howe explains how he plans to prepare exciting teenager Trevan Sanusi for the Premier League per The Mag
Eddie Howe has been talking about Trevan Sanusi.
The exciting 17 year old winger the only Newcastle United player to feature in all six of NUFC’s pre-season friendlies.
Trevan Sanusi playing the second-half of both St James’ Park friendlies this past weekend.
The teenager especially impressive on Friday night against Girona.
What does the future hold for Trevan Sanusi?
Eddie Howe explaining what he has in mind.
Eddie Howe on the exciting potential of Trevan Sanusi:
“I think he has got bits to learn of course, for someone his age (17).
“Tactically, Trevan Sanusi has got things to improve.
“We have got to build him up physically to protect him, to make sure he is robust enough to deal with the rigours of the Premier League.
“I think it is too early to loan him out.
“The biggest thing we have to do is to develop his talent and to keep improving his game, also develop him psychically.
“But he has left a positive impression on us and I’m really pleased with him.”
Eddie Howe on Will Osula:
“I loved the ‘goal’.
“The pace, the run, the finish, he didn’t know he was offside and I’m still not sure he was.
“He hadn’t trained a great deal because he’d had concussion, so there was some rustiness.
“You can see why we brought him to the club.”
Eddie Howe on more potential transfers with less than three weeks of the window remaining:
“Difficult to say exactly what is going to happen.
“These things aren’t exactly in my hands and I’m not really dealing with them, now we have other people in place to take control of those situations, allowing me to focus on coaching the team.
“They have to make sense.
“Whether that’s a positional need, or something becomes available in the market that we really like.
“Of course, you are looking to strengthen the group and improve the first team.”
Eddie Howe on Jamal Lewis:
“While he’s still here we will treat him with the respect he definitely deserves from how he’s conducted himself.
“He’s had a good pre-season but there is a chance he could end up leaving.
“We will work with him to find the solution he wants for his career.”
Eddie Howe reflecting on Newcastle 1 Brest 0:
“A really tough game.
“We weren’t quite at full speed.
“A lot of the players needed the game because they haven’t had the minutes.
“We looked a bit rusty and slightly off, technically and tactically.”
Do you think Marc Guehi would be a top signing for us?
